Purolite PD206 Ion Exchange Resin states:

If you have 15GPM system, then you will need 2,220lbs of Resin.
So 15GPM = 2,200 lbs from this equation you can determine how many pounds of resin you would need in a system per the recommendation of the resin manufacturer.
Let’s assume you have a 5GPM system:
5GPM/15GPM = .333 (33%)
.333 (33%) * 2,200lbs = 733.33lbs
Now 0.5GPM (1/2 Gallon per Minute)
0.5GPM/15GPM = .03333 (3.3%)
.03333 * 2,200lbs = 73.3lbs
Now what if the system only holds 7lbs?
7lbs/2200lbs = 0.00318 (0.318%)
0.00318 * 15GPM = 0.0477 GPM
This system would only be sized for 3/64th of a gallon a minute. That would take 21 minutes to do 1 gallon (1Gallon/.0477GPM = 21Minutes)!!!
The reason why the Resin Manufacture’s give this equation is to make sure the biodiesel has enough surface contact with the resin for a proper washing. Sure you can run biodiesel though a system as fast as you want but it WILL NOT wash properly unless you have the correct flow rate and amount of resin in your tower.
